Drive towards Shau Kei Wan via the Island Eastern Corridor. Turn left on Tung Hei Road as you drive down the Island Eastern Corridor. Our Museum is located next to the highway entrance.

Museum Carpark

The Museum carpark is open to our visitors from 10 am to 5 pm (extended to 6 pm from March to September). We are closed on Thursdays (except for public holidays) and the first two days of Lunar New Year. Visitors can park their car free of charge for up to three hours. Disabled visitors may contact us at 2569 1500 for assistance.

Drop-off/Pick-up Points and Parking Spaces for Coaches

Tour coaches can drop off and pick up visitors on the museum premises. Parking spaces for coaches are also available for registered schools and charitable or non-profit-making organisations with reservations. For details, please contact us at 2569 1248.

 

Facilities

The Museum is made up of three main areas, namely the 1/F Reception Lobby, the 8/F Redoubt, and the Historical Trail.

As a restored historical structure with extensive outdoor area, the Museum facilities are carefully designed to maintain a balance between visitors' comfort and preservation of historical relics. If you are anticipating a visit to the Museum, the following may give you some hints in planning an itinerary which will best fit your interest and strength.

Reception Area

This area is the main entrance point to the Museum, which consists of the Museum Carpark, Reception Lobby, and Lecture Hall. 

 
8/F Redoubt

The Lyemun Redoubt is where you will find the Museum's permanent exhibition, "The Story of Hong Kong Coastal Defence". There are 11 thematic galleries converted from casemates, taking you on a journey through hundreds of years of Hong Kong's coastal defence and military affairs.

The Upper Redoubt is divided into the following sections: Discovery Zone, Experience Base, Caring Station, and the Cafe.

Historical Trail

Overlooking the Lyemun Pass, the Museum's astounding views are accompanied by the Historical Trail that is filled with military relics.

The Historical Trail will be closed when Thunderstorm Warning, Red/Black Rainstorm Warning, or Typhoon Signal No.3 or above is issued. Outdoor guided tours at the Historical Trail will be cancelled.

Barrier-free Facilities

Barrier-free facilities and services are currently provided at the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence:

  • Designated car parking spaces for persons with disabilities
  • Tactile guide path and Braille and tactile floor plan at the reception hall and redoubt
  • Enquiries counter suitable for wheelchair users and assistive listening system at the reception hall
  • Accessible toilets at reception hall and redoubt
  • Braille and tactile markings and audible signal in passgenger lifts
  • Audio and visual signals of the emergency alarm system
  • Persons with disabilities can access to redoubt via lifts and ramps

Guided Tour

Guided Tour Service for Public

Guided tour service is available on every Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays for museum visitors for free. No reservation is required.*

11:00 am      "The Story of Hong Kong Coastal Defence" Permanent Exhibition (Cantonese)
2:15 pm        "The Story of Hong Kong Coastal Defence" Permanent Exhibition (Cantonese)
3:30 pm        Historical Trail in Lyemun Fort (Cantonese)

Each session lasts for about 1 hour. Interested individuals are advised to gather at the atrium of Redoubt on the 8/F 10 minutes before the tour begins.

*Each session can accommodate 30 participants, on a first-come, first-served basis. Tour schedules are subject to change and cancellation without prior notice.

Guided Tour Service for Groups

The following organisations in a group of 20 visitors or more can apply for free guided tours:

  1. Registered kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, post-secondary institutions, universities
  2. Charitable or non-profit-making organisations*

*Charitable or non-profit making organisations serving people with disabilities or the elderly can apply in a group of 10 visitors

Special Guided Tours for Groups by Appointments

Sign Interpretation Guided Tours

Sign interpretation guided tours are now offered for people with hearing impairments to enable them to learn more about the military history of Hong Kong. Each tour lasts about 2 hours for 20 persons (with a minimum of 10 persons) on a first come, first served basis. Please make prior reservation during office hours.

Visiting Rules

  • To ensure the safety of exhibits and for the benefit of other visitors, please do not use flash-light, other lighting devices, selfie sticks or tripods, and follow the photography and filming regulations of each exhibition hall.
  • Please do not write upon, mark, soil or damage any exhibit, installation, wall or facilities in the museum.
  • To keep the museum clean and tidy, please do not eat or drink beyond the designated areas.
  • To maintain a quiet, safe and pleasant environment, please do not make excessive noise or otherwise cause danger or disturbance.
  • Visitors must comply with the "Museums Regulation" (Cap. 132, section 105I) and any other rules enforced by the museum as and when required.
