Old Servicemen and Society

Thematic Exhibition

Here is an account of the garrison's interaction with the government and the community in Hong Kong spanning a period of more than 100 years. While exploring how the civil and military powers were at odds with each other, we also show how the two worked together. The garrison personnel lived apart from civilians, but they were deeply involved in public life.

Typhoon Wanda made a direct hit to Hong Kong on 1 September 1962. The garrison, including the Gurkhas, was sent to retrieve fishing vessels onshore and remove debris.
